The Squishy Face Studio Flirt Pole V2, Product Overview
About a year ago my wife and I rescued a puppy mill dog that had pretty much no obedience or structure in the first 16 months of its life — which is why her first owner gave her up. As part of managing her behavior in our house, teaching her impulse control has been a high priority. We really can’t have a dog that chases our cats every time she sees them! And we certainly don’t want her counter surfing every time we set food down on the kitchen counter or living room coffee table.
She is a smart German Shepherd / Husky mix with some generalized anxiety and a very strong prey drive. All of this has made a flirt pole an invaluable training toy!
With a flirt pole, we can get her to burn tons of energy in as little as 10 minutes. This is far more energy than she will burn chasing the ball, because there is no stopping. And as part of that energy burn, we can simultaneously teach her to control her prey drive impulse.
As flirt poles go, you just can’t beat the Squishy Face Flirt Pole for intelligent design, solid construction and ease of use. I’m going to walk you through some of my favorite features of the Squishy Face Flirt Pole.
Provide Intense Exercise in a Short Period
There are many reasons that you may not be able to walk your working dog 4-5 miles a day. If you can, that’s great! They will be more relaxed, better able to focus on your training and much more pleasant to live with. But if you can’t, you still need to find a way to burn that energy.
Chasing a ball IS a lot of exercise, but there are breaks in the action. And the average German Shepherd Dog, Border Collie, etc. can seemingly keep retrieving the ball until your arm falls off! A flirt pole is the answer. And not only because of the exercise, but because it can also teach your dog self-control.
It will take a bit of practice, but you can learn to keep the lure just out of the reach of your high-drive dog. This is important to learn. If you try moving the lure too erratically, it won’t take long for your working dog to figure out the way to beat the game is to clamp onto the cord rather than pursue the lure. You want to keep your dog focused on the lure.
When they catch the lure, praise them. Let them play for a while because, after all, this is their reward! At some point, step closer and give your dog the command to “Drop it”. When they do, more praise. Then start again.
Be creative! There are many ways to play with this toy.
The Squishy Face Studio Flirt Pole’s unique bungee cord is a great idea for at least a couple of reasons.
When the lure is attached by a solid line to the end of the pole, your dog’s grab of the lure can snap the pole itself. Some dogs hit hard! Even a 45 pound dog can move fast enough to break your pole. Worse yet, some poles available are made of fiberglass. If your dog chomps down on the tip of the pole while trying to cheat the game, the broken fiberglass can make a mess of their mouth.
On the positive side, when your dog catches the lure, you can then engage in a game of tug using the bungee cord. Tug is a valuable game to play with your dog because you are directly interacting with each other. It builds trust and strengthens the bond between the two of you. In your dog’s mind, the tugging mimics the prey’s attempt to get loose.
The first flirt pole I ever used was a DIY project I found on YouTube. Yes, it was inexpensive, but it was Heavy! My shoulder was getting more of a workout then my dog. There were a couple sessions where I had to stop before my dog was exhausted because I needed to rest my arm! A flirt pole should exercise your dog, not your shoulder, arm or wrist.
The Squishy Face Studio Flirt Pole with its bungee cord and lure attached weighs less than one pound. With this pole, you can have your dog intently following the lure and suddenly flip it to the other side of you. This will make many dogs freeze while staring at the toy. You can then tell your dog to “Stay” and slowly move the lure. This gives you a chance to strengthen your “Stay” command. You simply couldn’t do this exercise with a heavy pole!
Squishy Face offers a One Year No Risk guarantee. If you’re not satisfied with the toy, for any reason at all, you can return it within one year of purchase for a full refund, even including shipping if applicable. So you literally have nothing to lose when buying this toy!
It’s Conclusive, Squishy Face Studio Flirt Pole Is the Best!
I swear by this training tool/toy and I know other trainers and rescue workers who do, as well. I simply would not write a product review of a product I had not used myself. From the comfortable hand grip, to the bungee cord, to the easy no-fastener way of attaching the lure this a quality product.
Getting plenty of exercise can reduce your dog’s hyperactivity and destructive habits, not to mention help keep their weight down. The level of exercise provided by a good flirt pole can be so intense that your dog may have to work its way up to even a 20-minute play session. You will get far more than $28 worth of value from investing in this flirt pole.
If all of this sounds appealing, then I recommend you pick up your own Squishy Face Flirt Pole right away. If you’re a big on-line shopper like me, Amazon has the best price.
